The risks of developing psychiatric disorders are significantly increased among adolescents using cannabis, according to a recent study published in JAMA Health Forum. Adolescents aged 13 to 17 years who reported cannabis use had approximately 2-fold greater risks of incident psychotic and bipolar disorders. Cannabis use was also associated with increased risks of depressive (AHR 1.34) and anxiety disorders (AHR 1.24). Associations were strongest among early adolescents, with declining risk estimates as age increased into young adulthood.
